Registering to Vote
In order to vote in Virginia, you must meet the following qualifications:
- Resident of Virginia
(temporary residents are not considered Virginia residents, residency
must be established.)
- United States Citizen
- 18 years of age or older, or be
age 18
by election day
- Do not claim the right to vote in
any other state
- Not currently declared mentally
incompetent by a court of law
- If convicted of a felony, you
must have had your rights restored by the Governor

Voter Registration & Deadlines |
|
You may register to vote at any time
throughout the year. However, to vote in a particular
general election, you must be registered by 21 days before the election.
The deadlines for primary and special elections vary
depending upon the timetables set for those elections. Applications are available at many governmental
offices such as the DMV, Post Office, courthouses, etc. You may also
print out a Virginia voter registration application from the Virginia
State Board of Elections web site at
www.sbe.virginia.gov
and submit it to the local registrar. |

Absentee Voting |
|
Certain Individuals may be eligible to
vote by absentee ballot if they cannot be present at their home precinct
on election day. To find out the details and to print the
application for an absentee ballot, visit the Virginia State Board of
Elections web site at
www.sbe.virginia.gov
or contact your local voter registration office.
