Congratulations to the following Republican candidates on the ballot in the 2023 November General Election for winning their races.

Special Thanks!

A special thank you to Eric Davidson, our Clerk of Circuit Court nominee, for stepping forward to offer his candidacy.  Although winning the Clerk's race wasn't in the cards, he made a great effort and was certainly a winner in other ways.  Thank you, Eric!

Also, a special thank you to Lori Deel, our Treasurer nominee.  Lori ran an extremely close race with only a 66 vote margin of difference between her and the incumbent after all the votes were tallied.  Coming this close to unseating a 24 year incumbent is quite a feat.  Thank you, Lori!

March 15, 2023

The Smyth County Republican Committee selected a Party Canvass as the process to nominate Republican candidates for Clerk of the Circuit Court, Commonwealth’s Attorney, Sheriff, Treasurer, Commissioner of the Revenue, and Board of Supervisors in the North Fork, Park, Atkins, and Rye Valley districts for the November 7, 2023 General Election.

The pre-filing deadline was Wednesday, March 15 by 5:00pm for any interested candidates seeking the Republican nomination.

Uncontested Nominations

Congratulations to the following candidates who are unopposed for the Republican nomination for the office indicated.  These candidates advance to the November General Election ballot as the Republican nominee.

Contested Nominations

The following offices had more than one candidate file.  Thus, the nominee will be decided at the Party Canvass.  The canvass will be held on Saturday, May 6 from 10am-2pm at the Adwolfe Volunteer Fire Department, 107 Thomas Bridge Road, Marion, VA 24354.

About a Party Canvass

A party canvass (also known as a "firehouse primary") is like a primary election, except it is run by the Republican Party at an established central polling place.  During the hours the canvass is being held, those who appear with proper photo ID, sign the pledge to support Republican candidates, and are found to be properly registered voters are given a paper ballot to vote and deposit into a ballot box.  The voter will then leave after casting their ballot.  At the end of the canvass, the ballot box is opened and the results are tallied on site.  The person with the most votes for a particular office is the party's nominee.  Also, each candidate will be permitted to appoint observers to witness the canvass while it is in progress and during the vote counting.  Rules will be established for the conduct of the canvass.

Note:  For a contested Board of Supervisors office nomination, only registered voters from the respective district may vote on the nomination at the party canvass.
